Shock secrets

If using a spec shock and it needs to be softer, Lean it in, for ever 5 degees of lean you put on the shock you lose 10 percent of the shocks dampening effects.

On the other note, if you don’t have enough dampening from a shock, check to make sure the shock is not leaned into or on an angle, the best position for a shock to be mounted is body up vertically, shaft down, unless specified by the manufacturer.

Dented shock bodies can affect the way the shock dampens, if the shock is a twin body shock you may be able to use it. If it’s a mono tube shock chances are the shock will be bad.

Tire rub on a shock affects the gas and oil inside a shock, the heat thins the oil and raises the pressure of the gas, causing unstable dampening.

Do not use shock boots to cover the shaft or shock body, the increased heat build up affects the performance of the shock.

Stick with one brand of shock on your race car, with so many codes it makes it a night mare to remember all the shocks you have.

Remember, Shocks are a fine tuning device,  You can fine tune your cars handling by using a split valve shock to enhance its handling, by no means will it change your overall setup.

Rebuildable shocks do not need rebuilding but once a season for the weekend racer who has 30 lap races, the rebuildable shock should last 30-35 races.

If you have rebuildable shocks, having a shock dyno is a must.

You cannot alter the amount of weight a corner of the car  receives by changing to a heavier or lighter shock.  Springs do that job.

A tie down shock has more rebound then compression, a straight up shock has less rebound then compression.

You can repair shocks, its very expensive
